In honor of International Women's Day, over the next five days, we're going to feature five women who work at our tailoring center producing fair trade clothing. Without them, we couldn't bring you the beautiful designs, high-quality, and ethically made products you come to expect from Visible Clothing.
It's our delight and pleasure to introduce you to Sugandha, an integral part of the Visible Tailoring Team.
Explain a bit about what you do each day at the Visible Tailoring Center.
I work as production manager for Visible Tailoring Center. My key responsibility is to manage the ethical clothing production process so that it runs efficiently and follows the fair trade principles. I also monitor the fabric stock and if something is out of stock I have to order it on time.
In addition, I negotiate with suppliers to have products on time as well as at a reasonable cost. I review the performance of the employees and identify the training needs if it is required. I also make sure all the production schedule is on time and is cost effective.
You work with our amazing tailors every day, what do you wish people knew about them and the work they do?
My job includes a daily interaction with the tailors. We have a team of 16 tailors working with us and all of them come from different states of India like West Bengal, Punjab, Uttrakhand and even from Nepal. Some of them learned to stitch right from their childhood. Some of them have acquired skills in our factory only. Every tailor cooperates with each other. Most have not completed high school and what I admire is they understand the value of education and they are providing proper education facilities to their children. Visible Tailoring Center also contributes to their children's education. (Visible Tailoring Center pays 50% of all school fees.)
What do you love most about your job?
The thing I love most about my job is interaction with employees who are at different levels and the way each one values one another is amazing. The sense of belongingness we have with our workplace and the way our inputs and suggestions are considered is what I appreciate the most.
What do you like to do outside of work and on your days off?
I love spending time with my family. I usually go out for movies on my off days and eat good food. At times I also read books.
What do you enjoy the most about India, its culture, and people?
What I like most about India are the vibrant festivals we have throughout the year. We have a diverse culture, customs and languages which varies from place to place yet we are united. We value our family. Also, the spiritual wisdom we have and the ritual we follow are very interesting.
